Message from the Leader

The November 2010 election marked a shift in the political landscape. At every level of government, Americans rallied against a big government, big spending philosophy. As a result, we have the duty and privilege to do right by the citizens of our state who elected us to serve them.

The people of Florida have granted the Republican Party an 81-member, two-thirds majority in the Florida House of Representatives. But it is not the numerical strength of our caucus that will determine our actions, but instead the resolve to stand by our principles. Whether we serve as a party of 41, 61, or 81, we have the responsibility to not lose sight of the values that got us elected.

Our guiding principles as conservatives are to decrease the size and scope of government and to encourage private sector growth. To keep our great state strong, we must keep Florida economically competitive and shrink the burden on Florida’s families and businesses. We will work to cut unnecessary regulation, decrease bureaucracy, and stop needless intrusion into Floridians’ lives. As a free society, we must promote responsible citizenship and protect our individual liberties because government should not do for people what people can do for themselves.

Our state faces a fiscally challenging road ahead. This reality will test our conservative beliefs and reveal whether those beliefs are the cornerstone of our political philosophy or merely empty words. We must reexamine the primary functions of government and use that thinking to determine how we use our state’s resources.

We must take seriously the responsibility granted us by the people of Florida and set our state on a sustainable path for our children and grandchildren. Above all else, we must be good stewards of the authority the citizens of Florida have given us and work towards a better tomorrow for future generations of Floridians.

Carlos Lopez-Cantera, House Majority Leader, 2010-2012

Medicaid Transformation-Majority Memo

Posted by House Majority Leader :: Monday, April 19, 2010

Florida’s current Medicaid system is unsustainable. The program currently consumes 28% of our state budget. By 2014, the program is expected to consume over 33% of the entire state budget. Floridians simply cannot afford to continue to operating the program in its current form. Our goal is to improve the quality of care for Floridians, while controlling the spiraling out of control costs that are threatening the stability of the entire Medicaid program.

Quick Reference Guide for Teacher Quality: House Bill 7189

Posted by House Majority Leader :: Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Our common sense education reforms are about investing in what’s best for our children, and working hard to reward our teachers for what truly matters in education: individual student learning gains. The most important factor that we can control in education is the quality of a teacher at the front of the classroom. Our reforms are focused on making sure that we encourage our best teachers to stay in the classroom.

Keeping Floridians On the Job: Reducing Unemployment Taxes

Posted by House Majority Leader :: Thursday, March 2, 2010

As their first action of the 2010 Legislative Session, the Florida House reduced unemployment taxes. House Republicans recognize that it is better right now for Florida employers to use their dollars to keep Floridians working rather than be forced to lay off employees in order to afford a higher unemployment tax bill. The Department of Revenue had announced an over 1000% increase for many Florida businesses.

INVESTING IN FLORIDA’S TRANSPORTATION FUTURE

Posted by House Majority Leader :: Thursday, December 3, 2009

Passenger rail is an important investment in Florida’s infrastructure future and provides innovative and green transportation options for commuters and visitors, while creating jobs and helping recharge our state’s economy. The proposed bill represents a win for Florida commuters who will now have more access to cleaner and more efficient mass transit as part of our growing transportation system. It’s also a win for Florida taxpayers who understand best that now is not the time to raise taxes. I am pleased that we were able to fund this initiative with existing transportation dollars and am hopeful that our leaders in Washington will follow through on their commitments for Florida’s transportation future.

HASNER: EVERY FLORIDIAN WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT IS RECEIVING INCREASED AND EXTENDED BENEFITS

Posted by House Majority Leader :: Wednesday, November 18, 2009

“Floridians experiencing tough times due to the current economic downturn deserve better than the baseless political rhetoric being thrown around by Florida's Democrats. Every Floridian who is eligible for unemployment is receiving increased and extended benefits. To claim that Florida’s economic situation can be made better by taking stimulus money from the federal government for people who aren't currently eligible for unemployment and increasing the costs significantly in the future is simply not true and promises false hope at a time when Floridians deserve honest solutions."
